The cost of a first-class stamp for letters has increased from fifty cents to fifty-five cents. The new rate went into effect on January twenty-fifth, two thousand eighteen. The increase is the result of an uptick in the price of transportation and labor costs.

This is the first time that postage rates have increased in three years.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a government-operated postal system that offers many different postage rates and prices for its services. The USPS offers a variety of First-Class Mail® options including letters, cards, flats, and parcels. Prices start at just $0.49 for letters and increase based on weight and distance.

For cards, the price is $0.34 for the first ounce and increases by $0.21 for each additional ounce. Flats start at $1.00 for the first ounce and go up by $0.21 for each additional ounce, while parcels start at $2.67 for the first pound and cost an extra $0.15 per pound over that weight limit . There are also several Priority Mail® options available from the USPS which include Flat Rate packaging , Regional Rate boxes , and Express Mail .

Prices vary depending on the package type and destination but start as low as $5 .95 .

What are the Current Postage Rates

As of January 26, 2020, the USPS rates for domestic letters are as follows: First-Class Mail Letter (1 oz.) – $0.55 First-Class Mail Letter – Additional Ounces (each) – $0.15

First-Class Mail Flats/Large Envelopes (1 oz.) – $1.00 First-Class Mail Flats/Large Envelopes – Additional Ounces (each) – $0.20
